The bane of our existence is the cigarette butt! We have been campaigning for changes to be made … including ashtrays on city streets. Our campaign, called “Don’t Be A Butthead!”, involved surveying smokers at various events and appearing before City Council in support of a motion by Councillor Adriane Carr calling for a report on cigarette butt-reduction alternatives. Supporting our cause was our mascot, Butthead.
One result of our campaigning has been a pilot program that has seen over 100 ashtrays installed at various parts of downtown Vancouver (including two blocks in the West End). This is not the end, however; this is only a pilot project and must be successful in order for it to be expanded to thousands of ashtrays throughout Vancouver.
